Lincoln's Efforts
The movie is a recount of the efforts of Abraham Lincoln, the president during January in the year eighteen sixty-five to pass the amendment which abolished the country's slavery formally. Having expectations that the end of the Civil War was going to be within a month but having concern that his Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 would be dismissed once the war ended by the courts and the Thirteenth Amendment would go through defeat by the states returning slaves. He felt that it was very important that the amendment would be passed by January's end. This removed all the possibilities that the slaves set free might become slaves once more.
The 13th Amendment
For the amendment to be passed, Lincoln's hope depending on Francis Preston Blair, the founder of the Republican Party. Blair's influences ensured that every western and border state Republican member faction will support the 13th amendment. For supporting Lincoln, Blair wants him to engage immediately in peace negotiations with the Confederate government. This complicates the efforts of amendment by Lincoln since a big portion of the garnered support for it is from the faction of Radical Republicans where it is anathema to negotiate peace that keeps slavery intact. Later, a reluctant Lincoln helps Blair's mission push through.
Petersburg
After the passage of the Amendment, the narrative of the film moves forward 2 months, and portrays the visit of Lincoln to the Petersburg, Virginia battlefield where he makes an exchange with General Grant for a few words. Later, the Appomattox Courthouse surrender by General Lee occurs. On the night of the 14th of April, 1865, future measures that discuss possibilities of enfranchising blacks were discussed in a late night meeting between Lincoln and his cabinet. He gets a reminder that his wife awaits for their Ford's Theater evening together. The day after, Lincoln is pronounced dead after getting shot. The conclusion of the film is with the 2nd inaugural address being delivered by Lincoln.
